Q: Why isn’t there a set curriculum?
A: The primary reason we don’t have a set class curriculum is you. It was clear to the founders of JAI in 1974 (as it is to us today) that a set curriculum only benefits the teacher. Having all students do exactly the same thing, at the same time, regardless of their comprehension level is not good for students. It leaves beginner students lost and more advanced students bored. Every student learns at their own pace, so that is how we teach you. We have one teacher for every 4-5 students so each student gets individualized attention and can work on the jewelry projects that spark their interest. We strive to provide the very best learning experience for each student and that means letting you create at your own pace.
Q: What will I learn in one semester?
A: Our instruction is project based. New students will first receive a safety lecture to familiarize them with the safe operation of the torch and other studio equipment and then will begin working on a set of three stacking rings from fine and sterling silver. This project teaches fusing, soldering, polishing, and stone setting. Each student works at his/her own pace and can usually complete a set of stacking rings and at least one other project of his/her choosing (at the appropriate skill level) by the end of the semester.
Q: What is the difference between a Customized Intensive and a Weekly Class?
A: Whether you sign up for the Weekly Class or the Customized intensives, you will receive the same education, for the same cost. The only difference is your scheduling. Weekly classes are for people who like having a regular schedule and attending class every week. You can still schedule two makeup classes in case of illness (or any reason) but your general assumption is that you will attend class during that class time regularly for the 8 weeks.
Customized Intensives are for students who travel often, are visiting NYC, or have unpredictable schedules for any variety of reasons. Intensive students might attend multiple classes for a few weeks and then not come in for a month, or any variation that suits their schedule. Customized classes expire after one year, so you have one year to use them.
Q: What if I already have some experience?
A: Many students come to JAI with previous metalsmithing experience. Your teacher will work with you to determine how best to achieve your goals and decide on a starting project that accomplishes your objectives.
Q: What tools do I need to bring?
A: We have a beginner tool kit available for purchase for $282.64 which contains all the basic hand tools, silver, and stones needed to complete the first project. If you already have some tools, bring them and we can supply you with whatever you don’t already own. All the larger or specialized equipment such as torches, kilns, hammers, vises, setting tools, daps, drawplates, mandrels, pickle, mills, steel blocks, third arms, enamels, etc are provided for student use free of charge.
Q: What class is appropriate for my skill level?
A: At JAI we teach students individually and at their own pace. Within any one class or intensive you will find students at every level from beginner to advanced. You choose your class schedule according to what is convenient for you. Workshops on specific topics are listed with appropriate skill level.
Q: Do I need to know how to draw?
A: No. For the vast majority of our projects, you will start working directly in metal.
Q: Will I receive a certificate or job training at JAI?
A: No. Jewelry Arts Inc is a fine arts studio and does not provide job or career training.
Q: When can I begin?
A: As long as a seat is available in your desired class, we are happy to enroll you anytime, even mid-semester.

Q: What forms of payment do you accept?
A: We accept cash, personal checks, Visa, Mastercard, American Express and PayPal.
Q: What is your cancellation policy?
A: Deposits are refundable if class cancellation occurs two weeks or more before the class starts. Tuition is non-refundable.
Q: How do I enroll for classes?

Q: Are makeup classes available?
A: Yes. Two makeup classes are available per semester as long as the student notifies the school as to their absence. There are no makeups for Summer Intensives or Workshops.
Q: What are the school hours?
A: Wednesdays through Alternate Saturdays 11:00am-6:00pm and until 10:00 PM on Wednesdays.
